Enhancing capacity to integrate geospatial information for sustainable land management in Central Angola

The FAO Geospatial Unit is actively providing technical assistance to the "Sustainable Land Management in target landscapes of Central Angola (GCP/ANG/055/GFF)" project. This support aims to facilitate the development of historical land cover maps, conduct land degradation assessments, and promote sustainable land management (SLM) in Chongoroi, Chipipa, and Alto-Hama in Angola. As part of the ongoing support, a field mission was conducted in Huambo, Angola from 1st to 7th July 2023. The objective of this mission was to enhance the technical capacity of project officials and national institutions in integrating various geospatial and ancillary information for effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of sustainable land management activities.

During the mission, an indicator framework to monitor the SLM practices supported by the project was developed. A comprehensive set of 25 indicators, including 18 geospatial indicators, relevant to 9 SLM activities, was identified. Methodological approaches for the assessment of indicators along with a workplan were finalized. Monitoring these indicators is expected to enable informed decision making, effectively implement SLM practices and provide evidence of the impacts of SLM activities in the project areas.
