Geospatial information for sustainable food systems

Technical workshop on improving national capacities through the utilization of land cover metadata language (LCML) in Somalia

Geospatial Unit at Land and Water Division in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organizes the first 5 days training workshop in collaboration with FAO Somalia on 28th August to 1st September 2023 at FAO Somalia Office in Nairobi under the GCP /SOM/073/EC project. A total of 13 technical staff joined the training from FAO Somalia country office, different ministries and national organization. The primary goal of the training is to equip FAO Somalia and Line Ministry staff with the skills to develop a national land cover reference system, prepare land cover legends, and utilize the LCCS3 software.

FAO Somalia employs Information and Communication Technologies to manage land and water resources in Somalia's challenging environment, aiming to empower local institutions to self-sufficiently generate and manage natural resource information. Central to these efforts is the use of remote sensing and image analysis, vital for data collection given the security risks in the region. FAO's team in Somalia works on inventorying land resources' spatial distribution, assessing land degradation, and aligning with international standards like the land cover classification system (LCCS3) software, which adheres to the ISO 19144-2 – land cover meta language (LCML) standard.
