EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The international workshop on algae culture and innovation organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA), was held in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia in hybrid modality on 5 December 2022. Through the contribution of invited expert speakers, panelists and the active participation of attendees, the workshop presented progress made in the culture and commercialization of microalgae and macroalgae, highlighted the further potential for growth of this industry in the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, and the Red Sea regions and identified the challenges for effectively establishing viable commercial projects of microalgae and macroalgae culture.
