EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The data preparation meeting for eastern-central Mediterranean stocks of deep-water red shrimps (DWRS) of the Working Group on Stock Assessment of Demersal Species (WGSAD) was held at GFCM headquarters in Rome, Italy, in hybrid modality, on 16–17 October 2023. The meeting was attended by 28 participants from Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Palestine, Tunisia and Türkiye, as well as from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Secretariat of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). The main objective of this meeting was to provide a platform to review, discuss and analyse input data for the assessments of blue and red shrimp (Aristeus antennatus) and giant red shrimp (Aristeomorpha foliacea) in the eastern and central Mediterranean Sea in advance of the WGSAD session to be held in December 2023. Information on the following six DWRS stocks was presented and discussed: giant red shrimp in i) geographical subarea (GSA) 24, ii) GSA 25, ii) GSA 26 and iv) GSAs 12, 13,14, 15, 16 and 21 West; and blue and red shrimp in v) GSA 24 and vi) GSA 26.
