Developing capacity for strengthening food security and nutrition

FAO’s project highlighted at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF)

The "Developing Capacity for Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Selected Countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia" project was highlighted in the presentation and speech of the Permanent Representation of Russian Federation to the United Nations, held in the context of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) which took place in New York on 17 July 2018.

During the meeting, the statement by Mr. Andrey Chibis, Deputy Minister for Construction, Utilities and Housing, emphasized the Russian Federation’s role as a provider of international development assistance as a donor actively involved in many areas of work and several programmes and projects for different countries in the world.

The Russian Federation’s support covers numerous sectors as health, education, environmental sustainability, socio-economic development, poverty eradication, and related sectors through the modernization of trade and economic infrastructure, industry, innovation, capacity-building and public administration. Particularly, in the context of the achievement of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) Russia is placing major international efforts to promote food security and nutrition.

In this general context, the project “Developing Capacity for Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Selected Countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia” was mentioned as a concrete example of collaboration between Russia and FAO. With financial support from Russia, FAO is implementing a comprehensive approach to rural development based on the links of agriculture, food security, nutrition and social protection in three target countries: Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

During his statement, Mr. Andrey Chibis declared that is important for Russia to side by vulnerable countries. For this project, six million were allocated for the implementation of technical assistance to support the governments of Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to ensure food security and nutrition, as well as sustainable development of their agriculture.

In addition, the three pilots of the project: the “School Food and Nutrition Programs linked to the Agricultural Sector”, “Strengthening Food Systems with Nutrition Sensitive Social Protection” and “Promoting Inclusive Economic Growth through Matching Grants”, were also featured in an impressive video displayed during the Permanent Representation of Russian Federation to the United Nations.
