Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme

Colombia

MICCA supported the Instituto de Hidrología Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM) by performing a Quality assurance (QA) and verification for the AFOLU component of Colombia’s National GHG Inventory.

Three main activities were implemented:

  1. A desk review
  2. A country visit to allow a more thorough review process
  3. The preparation of a final QA report

This process facilitated a fruitful and constructive dialogue whereby both parties were able to learn from each other. Finally, FAO provided concluding recommendations relating to the long-term sustainability of the national inventory process, specifically suggesting that the country focus their efforts not only on data quality and methodological improvements, but on ensuring long term arrangements and necessary technical training for personnel involved in the compilation process to maintain the quality of the GHG inventory over time.

In collaboration with the UN-REDD Programme, MICCA provided technical assistance during the Latin American workshop exchanging experience on the preparation of the national greenhouse gas inventory (NGHGI). The aim of the workshop was to share experience and lessons learnt on the progress of implementing the IPCC methods for the preparation of the NGHGI, the establishment of the NGHGI system and the presentation of the Biennial Update Report (BUR) in the Latin American Region.
