Crop Mapping

2019

Detailed land use and crop maps using remote sensing were prepared for the El Hamiz and Biskra irrigation sites for two growing seasons.

2019

A team of four experts were trained to produce crop maps using remote sensing and to use FAO's WaPOR database.

2020-2021

The crop maps using remote sensing were realized in the area of the perimeter of El Hamiz as well as the land use maps in the plain of El Outaya (the region of Biskra).

Measurement of ET

2019

Two experts were trained on the installation and operation of the Cordova ET station.

2019 - 2020

A pilot site at ITGC Oued Smar (Mitidja) has been installed with improved agrometeorological stations complemented by sensors (ET Cordova station) to measure evapotranspiration of wheat by comparing irrigated and rainfed crops. Monitoring is still ongoing.

2021

The new ET-Cordova station was delivered, as well as the spare parts for the old station.

Water accounting

2019 - 2020

A fifteen-member multidisciplinary water accounting team was created and trained on rapid water accounting.

2019 - 2021

A case study on rapid water accounting was conducted on the El Hamiz irrigation system, which analyzed the realities and opportunities of water scarcity (report being finalized).

2021

Training sessions on water accounting with IHE Delft technical partners on Water Management and Governance, Use of FAO WaPOR Portal, QGIS, Environmental Flows, Hydrology and Water Resources Assessment, and Remote Sensing for Water Resources Management were implemented, where 10 MRESH representatives obtained training certificates.

2021

The WA team benefited from remote coaching sessions by IHE Delft concerning the elaboration of a synthesis report comparing WaPOR spatial data with rapid accounting data at the El Hamiz perimeter (report in progress).

2021

Numerous training sessions were implemented including:

- Training session on Python for geospatial hydrology applications.

- Water Accounting Basics Plus (WA+) training session.

- Training session on Introduction to Spatial Data Infrastructures.

- Google Earth Engine (GEE) training session.

Crop Water Productivity (Baseline Study)

2018

A team of four experts were trained on water productivity and methodologies.

2019

Four experts shared their water productivity experiences at the Regional Water Productivity Conference and successfully joined the Water Productivity Community of Practice.

2019

A baseline of crop water productivity at the national level was developed, gathering results from existing literature and research conducted in the country on strategic crops (report in progress).

2021

A training of facilitators was implemented to 30 facilitators on the FFS approach using FAO’s methodology. More training sessions were implemented to the facilitators, including training sessions on:

-       Techniques of tomato under greenhouse production.

-       Integrated pest management of greenhouse tomato diseases and pests.

2021

A training of RWH was implemented to 20 facilitators on the use of water saving systems.

2021

A training was implemented to MADR and MRESH representatives on the calibration and validation of the AquaCrop model.
