Water efficiency, productivity and sustainability in the NENA regions (WEPS-NENA)

Activities

Only the main events organized in the country are summarized in the table below. Egypt hosting the FAO regional office and the project management team, have hosted a number of international events where the other countries were invited.

Long Training for Trainers by IHE to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt on the use of remote sensing for Water Accounting (WA+). 20 people from the MWRI benefitted from this training.

Three technical sessions were implemented at the Cairo Water Week on water accounting; water productivity and solar pumping.

Project participation in the Land and Water Days with two technical sessions (water accounting; and nexus), two trainings (use of remote sensing; and nexus tools) and demonstration at the fair.

Regional training on ET measurement and the use of the ET Cordova station by UCO with installation of the ET Cordova station in Zankalon site. Twenty-five participants including Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine attended the training.

Mar. - Oct.

 

Three sites

As part of a regional training on crop mapping using remote sensing, country teams collected data points in three sites over two seasons, prepared crop maps using remote sensing, and presented results to the government.

Aug.

Study tour

A study tour was implemented in Italy on sustainable water management and irrigation modernization. Four officials participated, two from MWRI, two from MALR and the FAO country coordinator.

Sept.

Conference

Participation in the World Irrigation Forum organized by ICID, with contribution from the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation at the high level policy panel and the Planning Director presenting water accounting.

Oct.

Cairo

Two technical sessions were implemented with 200 participants at the Cairo Water Week on water accounting, and water productivity. Also, a regional training on advanced water accounting was implemented to 40 participants, as an introduction for analysts. A booth was also set up with different activities and presentations.

Study Tour

A study tour was implemented in Australia on sustainable water management and irrigation modernization. Four officials participated, two from MWRI, two from MALR and one from FAO Egypt.

Country-wide

Preliminary baseline on crop water productivity for strategic crops from national literature was produced and presented at the Regional water productivity Conference in Tunisia.

2020

Various events and trainings were planned in March-April, but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Al Minia

Training for Trainers on Farmer Field Schools approach and tools. Twenty participant attended including extension specialists.

Training on WA+ interpretation for the MWRI water accounting unit by IHE Delft.

Country-wide

Presentation of the project results to key country stakeholders (Zoom webinar).

Three sites

The third crop mapping season was implemented, where data was collected using remote sensing.

Al Minia and Kafr El Sheikh

Water level and Ec sensor equipment installation and training in Al-Minya and Kafr ElSheikh governorates. Twenty-three participants attended.

On the job training on Rapid Water Accounting for Sidi Gazi irrigation scheme. Twenty participants from MWRI headquarters and local staff attended the training.

On the job  training on Rapid Water Accounting for Malawi irrigation scheme. Twenty participants from MWRI headquarters and local staff attended the training.
