Crop Mapping

2019 -2020

Detailed land use and crop maps using remote sensing were prepared for the three sites for three cropping seasons, together with an exhaustive agronomic report. The maps covered for each site include:  27 000 feddan in Malawi site; 57 000 feddan in Sidi Ghazi site; and 100 000 feddan in Zankalon site. Zankalon site is also included as one of the 30 m resolution site of the FAO global Wapor database.

2019

A team of 20 experts from MALR and MWRI (head office and 3 governorates) were trained on the use of ODK application and data gathering for the preparation of crop maps.

2019

A team of two experts were trained in the realization of crop maps using remote sensing and the use of the FAO Wapor Database.

ET measurement

2019 -2020

Two pilot sites in the Sakha Research station (Kafr El Sheikh) and Zankalon research station (El Sharqia) were installed with improved agrometeor stations completed by sensors (ET Cordova station) to measure wheat and Maize evapotranspiration comparing between different treatments. Monitoring is still ongoing. Sakha research station is also part of the pilot NENA ET Network implemented by ICARDA with an ongoing comparative analysis of different ET measurement instruments (Edicovariance , energy balance, and ET Cordova).

2019

A team of two experts were trained on the fabrication and installation of the ET Cordova station.

Water Accounting

2018 -2019

An eight member multidisciplinary team were trained on advanced water accounting using WA+ by IHE Delft with implementation in El Fayoum Oasis (this activity started with the support of FAO Water Scarcity Initative and is now fully supported by the EU-STAR project).

2019

MWRI established a water accounting unit within the planning department of the MWRI. This unit of seven experts is responsible for producing water accounting assessments and reports. The project supported the basic infrastructure for a functional unit.

2019 - 2020

Draft case studies of rapid water accounting were realized in Kafr El Sheikh and Al Minya governorates, analyzing the realities of water scarcity and water issues (report under development).

2020

Governorate level on the job training were implemented on water accounting, targeting multidisciplinary specialists in Kafr El Sheikh and Al Minya governorates. The aim was to co-develop water accounting assessments and their analysis.

Crop Water Productivity (baseline)

2019

A baseline on crop water productivity at country level was implemented, gathering results from existing literature and research done in the country on strategic crops (report under development).

2018

A team of three experts were trained on the concepts and methodologies of water productivity.

2019

Four experts shared their water productivity experience at the regional water productivity conference, and successfully joined the water productivity community of practice.

Pilot site :  Water Productivity

2020

150 farmer surveys were done in the three pilot sites, which analyzed farmer practices vis-a-vis water, and their water productivity (report under development).

2020

Three farmer field schools were initiated in Al Minya governorate on improving water productivity of sugar crops.
