IMD tree planting activity in Kenya

Development Training and Research Africa (DETRA-Africa), The Centre for Research in Environment in Kenya and their coorganizers are holding an event centred on mountains’ importance as sources of fresh, clean water and home to biodiversity hotspots – particularly focusing on Mount Kenya and the Mount Kenya Forest. The IMD event will include a lecture on these topics and a tree planting activity.

CHINAR celebrates IMD 2019 with a festival

The Central Himalayan Institute for Nature and Applied Research (CHINAR) will celebrate the ecological and cultural heritage of the Indian Himalaya for International Mountain Day 2019. The organization plans to hold a three-day event in Liti village, Bageshwar, Uttarakhand to recognize biodiversity and culture, popularize sustainable mountain tourism and promote the region. They are planning an open conference for community members to discuss mountain-related themes; a day of hiking and trekking; and a fest with rural games, traditional dance, handicrafts [...]

Greek island takes action for IMD 2019

In light of International Mountain Day, the University of the Mountains will conduct an excursion to the Municipality of Platanias, Crete, Greece, on 10 October. There, they will perform medical examinations on the vulnerable Karanou population, educate primary school children and facilitate an open discussion with mountain peoples about their livelihoods. Monthly excursions to mountainous and remote villages of Crete and the Aegean islands will occur in the future. Photo from The University of Mountains

Peru organizes mountain conference on IMD 2019

The National Institute of Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems of Peru is organizing the international symposium, “Mountains: Our Future”, to be held in Cusco, Peru from 10 to 12 December to celebrate International Mountain Day. The symposium aims to exchange knowledge on climate change in these ecosystems, analyse the role of research on public policy and implementation, and identify the way forward on these issues.

ICENECDEV celebrates IMD 2018

The International Centre for Environmental Education and Community Development (ICENECDEV) in collaboration with 10 local partners and 100 students from the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Buea in Cameroon celebrated IMD by by raising awareness of mountain resources to sustainable livelihoods.

UNA-USA and UVU celebrate IMD 2018

Utah Valley University (UVU) celebrated IMD 2018 this past December by attending several events including the "Tackling Climate Change and Building Resilience for Mountain and Rural Communities" side event at the United Nations in New York. The United Nations Association of the United States (UNA-USA) posted a piece about their collaboration with the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF) to raise awareness about mountain targets in North America.  Photo by Samuel Elzinga

Virunga Wildlife Clubs celebrates IMD 2018

Virunga Wildlife Clubs organized an awareness campaign to promote environmental information in more than 356 schools. Additionally, to raise awareness for the "MountainsMatter" theme, conferences, workshops, mountain climbing and exhibitions were organized. 

Iran celebrates International Mountain Day

The Mountain Environment Protection Society (MEPS) celebrated International Mountain Day (IMD) in Tehran, Iran.  A "High Mountains in Drylands" conference was organized where various governmental organizations discussed mountain related activities. In the Alborz province, Hashtgerd, approximately 100 participants gathered to watch several performances with traditional costumes and music. 

Sri Lanka celebrates IMD 2018

For the ninth consecutive year, Prabhawa, an environmental organization organized an event in Haputale, Sri Lanka to celebrate International Mountain Day. Sampath Lamahewa, the mayor awarded Prabhawa for its dedicated contribution on environmental conservation activities. Over 100 participants attended the event.
