UIAA to announce Mountain Protection Award, 3 December

The UIAA will announce the winner of the 2020-2021 UIAA Mountain Protection Award (MPA) on 3 December. The webinar will be part of the lead-up to Saturday, 11 December’s annual International Mountain Day. In the weeks leading up to the webinar, the winner of the Best New Initiative and Runner-Up prizes will be announced on the UIAA social media channels.

Towards one health: Making our mountains resilient

The Darjeeling Himalaya Initiative of the Integrated Mountain Initiative is hosting the 10th Sustainable Mountain Development Summit on “Towards one health: Making our mountains resilient” on 18-20 November 2021. The key objectives are to advocate for resilient and sustainable policies and programmes in the Indian Himalayan Region to reduce future risks due to climate change, disasters and pandemics.

Join the Canadian Mountain Network's IMD celebrations

In celebration of International Mountain Day (IMD), the Canadian Mountain Network together with and Reconciling Ways of Knowing: Indigenous Knowledge and Science will host a webinar on conserving cultural and natural heritage on 9 December. In the lead up to IMD, starting on 15 November, the Canadian Network will conduct a social media contest. Learn more.

An art show to celebrate IMD 2021

A digital art show by Selva Ozelli, "Art in the time of Corona: Recovery roses” celebrates International Mountain Day, where coronavirus is depicted in the form of roses for sustainable mountain tourism.  Roses have been cultivated for the last 5 000 years in close to 40 000 varieties on almost every continent and in mountains. An event on tourism for inclusive growth

On the eve of World Tourism Day (27 September), the International Summit on Tourism for Inclusive Growth was organized by Conscious Ventures in partnership with  MCH International, University of Malaysia, Roger Harris Associates, CompanyCSR, CED. Participants from more than ten countries joined the session, which was followed by the formal launch of the Sustainable Development and Responsible Tourism Network by Francois Bedard, CEO of the World Centre of Excellence for Destinations.

Indonesian Mountaineering Federation hosts IMD webinar series

The Indonesian Mountaineering Federation is hosting a webinar series to commemorate the 2021 International Mountain Day theme, “Sustainable mountain tourism.” The first installment on Saturday, 29 May 2021 will discuss Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay's first summit of Mt. Everest on 29 May 1953 as well as George Leigh Mallory's expedition to Mt. Everest in 1921.

Honouring Lebanon's mountains

The Lebanon Mountain Trail Association organized two activities in celebration of International Mountain Day 2020, including the web dialogue “Conserving Lebanon's high mountains: Importance and challenges” and an art competition for children. Children aged 4 to 14-years-old were invited to submit a drawing that showcased the splendor of Lebanon and its mountains. The drawing had to include a Lebanese mountain, flower or plant, wild animal or a native tree.

New Mountain Partnership Goodwill Ambassador appointed on IMD

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat hosted a virtual celebration on 11 December on Zoom. Highlighting the work that many Mountain Partnership (MP) members are doing around the world, the event featured a high-level segment, a session on collaborative actions and programmes, and a round table featuring the MP Goodwill Ambassadors. Trail and sky runner Mira Rai became the newest MP Goodwill Ambassador.

Children learn to care for mountains and the environment on IMD

Redar Peru, the Andean Knowledge Network, Oberle Peru and Fundación Educación y Desarrollo celebrated International Mountain Day together with World Children's Day on 11 December. They organized a virtual meeting in Spanish for children of Ibero-American countries. The meeting encouraged the children to appreciate each other's difference and to value their peers' culture to create a culture of peace and caring for Mother Earth, in particular for mountains.

Two videos dedicated to the mountains of Greece

The Cultural Association of Angista in cooperation with the UNESCO Club of Serres, Greece, produced two videos on mountains for International Mountain Day: "Mountains of Greece by Drone," and "Belles mountain, the beauty of nature." The Association also worked with two local high schools to give a presentation on IMD.
