Manizales, CaldasColombia

Given the strong impact that the behavior of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano recently generated in our region and especially in the department of Caldas, which significantly increased its activity since 24 March 2023, a series of activities were carried out by this territorial entity with the purpose of taking concrete actions, among which is the issuance of Decree No. 167 of 5 April 2023 “By which the situation of public calamity is declared in the department of Caldas.”

After this, the International Relations Advisory Office, an office attached to the Office of the Governor of Caldas, carried out a search for national and international allies. The aim was to meet for a few days to hear input and provide analysis tools to address the challenges, opportunities and potential that the presence of a volcanic area with the singularities that characterize the iconic Nevado del Ruiz Volcano brings to the territory.

This has inspired an international event that will take place on from 11 to 14 December, declared by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate International Mountain Day whose theme for this year is “the restoration of mountain ecosystems.” Various institutional and academic activities will be carried out with the purpose of weaving future actions within the framework of international relations, whose impact is intended to have important effects on strengthening the installed capacity and resilience of the communities they inhabit around the volcano. We hope to achieve a paradigm shift regarding living with it.

The meeting “between volcanoes – a living fire that unites us” has a multi-stakeholder approach, which is why the participation of various public and private entities is considered, in order to strengthen the installed capacity of the communities, providing significant reflections. with a view to generating new opportunities for collaborative work in pursuit of their well-being.
