Jammu and Kashmir Mountaineering and Adventure Club 'JKMAC' celebrated International Mountain Day at the main Campus, Institute of Management, Public Administration (IMPA), M.A. Road, Srinagar.
International Mountain Day is organized every year on 11 December worldwide to create awareness about sustainable mountain development.
International Mountain Day has its roots in 1992 when the adoption of Chapter 13 of Agenda 21 “Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development”
at the United Nations, (UN) Conference on Environment and Development put a milestone in the history of mountain development.
The increasing attention to the importance of mountains led the UN General Assembly
to declare 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains.
On this occasion, the UN General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as “International Mountain Day”.
2023 Theme: The theme for International Mountain Day 2023 is "Restoring Mountain Ecosystems." Mountains are essential for human lives and livelihoods, providing resources such as freshwater, energy, and food. Their conservation is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals.
Speaking on the occasion Mentor of JKAMC Mahmood A Shah said Kashmir has significant importance for adventure tourism.
He said the Club is celebrating the day to create awareness among the masses especially students about the importance of the mountains which surround us.
The movies on mountaineering, trekking & hiking in Kashmir were also screened which were appreciated by the viewers on the occasion, JKMAC gave away the annual Award of Appreciation to deserving members and Team Leaders.
The club also paid tribute to our beloved brothers and mentors who passed away in recent years.
We would like to thank all the participants, speakers, and guests of honor for taking out time to be a part of this event.
JKMAC congratulates the participants who were awarded for their achievements for the year 2023 in the IMD ceremony.
We hope to continue to nurture the passion for hiking and adventure sports amongst youth in Kashmir.
