FAO support to Fishery sector in Myanmar GEF-FishAdapt Project on “Strengthening the adaptive capacity and resilience of fisheries and aquaculture-dependent livelihoods in Myanmar

The signing ceremony of GEF-FishAdapt project on “Strengthening the adaptive capacity and resilience of fisheries and aquaculture-dependent livelihoods in Myanmar” was held on 1st March 2017 in Nay Pyi Taw. His Excellency Dr. Aung Thu, Union Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation opened the Signing Ceremony with Ms. Xiaojie Fan, FAO Representative in Myanmar and U Khin Maung Maw, Director General of Department of Fishery (DOF), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation  (MOALI).  

This four year project includes 6 million contribution from GEF-LDCF with additional co-financing of US$ 12.4 million from the government.

The project objective is to assist government to enable inland and coastal fishery and aquaculture stakeholders to adapt to climate change by understanding and reducing vulnerabilities, piloting new practices and technologies, and sharing information. Key areas of focus for the project will include strengthening of national, regional, and local regulatory frameworks and adaptive capacities, fisheries co-management measures, integrated mangrove fisheries and aquaculture, inland fisheries and small-scale aquaculture, and critical issues related to land and resource tenure.

 “This project FishAdapt is very specific for fishery sector and development of adaptation strategy, ways and means in order to enhance adaptive capacity and facilitate developing climate resilient for Myanmar fisheries and aquaculture dependent people from climate change challenges” said H.E Dr. Aung Thu, Union Minister.

“FAO’s environmental priorities and mandates are fit with the government priorities and also SDGs and we have a lot to do in the area of resilience and climate change adaptation through this project” said Ms. Xiaojie Fan, FAO Representative in Myanmar.

The project sites will be in Rakhine, Ayeyarwady, Yangon and Dry zone areas.
