Water and Food Security in 2012The theme of "Water and Food Security" is high on the agenda this year with three major international events that address the relationships between water and food production and look at ways to feed growing populations within the boundaries of our freshwater resources.
There are 7 billion people to feed on the planet today and we are expected to be 9 billion by 2050. Growing populations, incomes increase and urbanization are expected to augment food requirements by 70 to 100 percent globally towards 2050. Whereas daily drinking water requirements for a person are 2-4 litres, it takes between 2000 and 5000 litres of water to produce one person's daily food. To secure food for everybody, we first need to secure water.
