Water and Food Security in 2012

The theme of "Water and Food Security" is high on the agenda this year with three major international events that address the relationships between water and food production and look at ways to feed growing populations within the boundaries of our freshwater resources.

There are 7 billion people to feed on the planet today and we are expected to be 9 billion by 2050. Growing populations, incomes increase and urbanization are expected to augment food requirements by 70 to 100 percent globally towards 2050. Whereas daily drinking water requirements for a person are 2-4 litres, it takes between 2000 and 5000 litres of water to produce one person's daily food. To secure food for everybody, we first need to secure water.

FAO invites you for a series of appointments on water and food security this year to find out more and discover what needs to be done:

6th World Water Forum
12-17 March 2012, Marseille, France

6th World Water Forum

The 6th World Water Forum addresses twelve thematic priorities intended to cover all issues related to water resources.

FAO and the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) are coordinating the preparations for theme 2.2 “Contribute to food security by optimal use of water”.

Through a series of surveys and stakeholder consultations, 9 targets have been identified and 22 dedicated sessions will take place during the Forum to move from "targets" to solutions".
