About the series

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World is an annual flagship report jointly prepared by FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO to inform on progress towards ending hunger, achieving food security and improving nutrition and to provide in-depth analysis on key challenges for achieving this goal in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The report targets a wide audience, including policy-makers, international organizations, academic institutions and the general public.

Building climate resilience for food security and nutrition

New evidence in SOFI 2018 confirms a rise in world hunger: the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to levels from almost a decade ago. Multiple forms of malnutrition are evident in many countries: adult obesity is growing even as forms of undernutrition persist.

The report says that climate variability and extremes are key drivers behind this rise, together with conflict and economic downturns, and are threatening to erode and reverse gains made in ending hunger and malnutrition. SOFI 2018 reveals new challenges on the road to Zero Hunger, while setting out urgent actions needed to achieve the goal by 2030.

Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Europe and Central Asia 2018

The Europe and Central Asia region encompasses great economic, social and environmental diversity, and its countries are facing various food security and nutrition challenges. While they have made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of undernourishment over the past two decades, new evidence shows a stagnation of this trend, particularly in Central Asia.

The Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Europe and Central Asia 2018 provides new evidence for monitoring trends in food security and nutrition within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The in-depth analysis of progress made against Sustainable Development Goal 2 Target 2.1 (to end hunger and ensure access to food by all) and Target 2.2 (to end all forms of malnutrition), as well as the state of micronutrient deficiencies, is complemented by a review of recent policy measures taken to address food security and nutrition in all its dimensions.

Accelerating progress towards the SDGs

The 2018 Asia-Pacific regional report on Food Security and Nutrition focuses on the urgent need to accelerate work across this region to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal on Zero Hunger; presents new analyses and updates on key indicators of food security and nutrition and offers new insights on prominent drivers of food insecurity.

The report analyzes data against multiple indicators. Two selected themes receive in-depth consideration, each covering a set of drivers (i) climatic shocks and disasters, and their linkages with food security and nutrition, and (ii) the state of access to water, sanitation and hygiene. In view of rapid urbanization in the region and its implications for food systems and nutrition, the report presents a review of issues and responses on the special topic of Urban Malnutrition.
