Ending poverty is the first target of the SDGs and one of the three global goals of the FAO. In particular, FAO concentrates its poverty reduction efforts in rural areas, where the majority of the world poor live, and where the Organization has a competitive advantage. Poverty is also a key underlying driver of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition so reducing it is not negotiable for achieving the Zero Hunger goal (SDG2).
The Recent COVID-19 pandemic will have the potential to slow down and even reverse the progress toward ending rural poverty that has been achieved so far. In this context, timely and accurate predictions of the impact of COVID-19 will be fundamental to coordinate a response against this threat, both globally and within countries.
In this webinar, experts from international development organizations will present their estimations of the potential impact of COVID-19 on poverty. They will discuss the most salient technical features and assumptions of their models, focusing on how these could be used to develop specific estimates for rural areas. They will also discuss the mechanisms through which this crisis will affect the rural poor, which is particularly important to promote more effective mitigation actions.
About the guest speakers:
R. Vos is Director of the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division at IFPRI. Previously, he was Director of the Agricultural Development Economics Division at FAO, where he has also served as coordinator of FAO’s strategic program for rural poverty reduction. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Free University of Amsterdam.
D. Laborde is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade and Institutions Division and the Theme Leader on Macroeconomics and Trade for IFPRI. Prior to joining IFPRI, he was an Economist at the Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales (CEPII). He received s PhD from the University of Pau.
D. Gerszon Mahler is a Young Professional in the World Bank’s Development Data Group, where he is part of the Sustainable Development Statistics team. Before that, he was with the Poverty and Equity Global Practice. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Copenhagen.
