TCP/RER/3004 final workshop
28-30 March 2007, Tbilisi, Georgia
As part of its response to halt the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry and in order to assist countries in the Eastern Europe and Caucasus regions in their efforts aiming to prevent and control HPAI outbreaks, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched and implemented a Regional Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) Project: "Emergency assistance for early detection and prevention of avian influenza in the Eastern Europe and Caucasus regions" (TCP/RER/3004) since November 2005. A series of regional workshops and training sessions have been organized under this project for technical staff from beneficiary and participating countries to cover aspects of laboratory diagnosis and surveillance of HPAI both in domestic poultry and migratory birds. These activities were underpinned by specific action-oriented assistance in response to the countries' priorities and immediate needs.
The TCP/RER/3004 final workshop will be held in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 28 to 30 March 2007. The workshop will also include a comprehensive component on Outbreak and Risk Communication planning, and will be organised and facilitated by the FAO AI Communication team. Further to this, technical presentations will be given on HPAI epidemiology, including an overview of the final results from surveillance campaigns in migratory birds, conducted in some countries of the region in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and Wetlands International. The workshop is being organised for CVOs and the communication focal points for HPAI prevention and control.
