What is FOWECA?
FOWECA aims at identifying future options for forestry sector development in West and Central Asia to the year 2020.
FOWECA is part of an ongoing FAO initiative to provide regional and global perspectives on development in the forestry sector.
Who is FOWECA for?
FOWECA will be of value to those concerned with the future of forests and forestry in West and Central Asia:
national policy-makers and planners;
decision-makers in development organizations and agencies;
academic and research institutions;
non-governmental organizations;
private investors;
individuals in civil society.
Why FOWECA?
Forestry in the region will be shaped in the next 20 years by significant changes in societies such as population increase, economic development and institutional reforms.
The forestry outlook study will help meet future challenges in forestry by:
providing long-term perspectives for national forest programmes;
improving country capacities in strategic planning;
promoting regional collaboration.
National level
Focal points, with FAO support, coordinate national-level efforts involving key stakeholders such as governments, the private sector and civil society to prepare a country forestry outlook paper focusing on likely changes in the sector.
Regional and subregional levels
FAO, with country support, coordinates:
seminars and workshops to discuss subregional and regional issues;
networking to facilitate information exchange;
socio-economic and institutional studies;
thematic studies.
FOWECA is based on national and regional expertise in West and Central Asia, complemented by information from other sources.

Outlook reports and thematic papers providing in-depth assessments of emerging issues, trends an developments opportunities and challenges in the region
