Farm Commercialisation and Rural Enterprise Development - Workshop

Workshop on Farm Commercialisation and Rural Enterprise Development in Selected CIS Countries

The workshop will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, from 11 to 15 October 2004. Approximately 25 participants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, representing government ministries and agencies representatives, farmers, extension, research and development and other relevant stakeholders, as well participants from selected EU countries are expected to participate in the workshop.

Workshop objective
The objective of the workshop is to contribute to improved adoptive capacity for farm commercialisation and rural enterprise development in CIS countries as a pathway for improved rural livelihoods. To achieve the objective the workshop will:
provide a forum for appraisal of specific approaches to farm commercialisation, focusing on driving factors, adaptive capacity and support requirements for successful and sustainable farm and rural enterprise development in a changing economic and institutional environment.
contribute to capacity building for the design and implementation of support programmes and policies which contribute to enhancement of management and enterpreneural skills, improved responsiveness of support services tailored to farmers' needs , and adequate institutional arrangements which can further farm commercialisation and rural enterprise development.

Expected workshop outputs
1. Review of past, on-going and prospective support programmes and specific approaches to farm commercialisation and rural enterprise development in participating countries.
2. Draft guidelines for the design of support programmes and policies for farm commercialisation and rural enterprise development (FC&RED) in participating countries.
3. Proposals and recommendations for future activities and technical assistance needed to improve the information exchange on best practices in FC&RED as a tool for capacity building.

Organization and venue of the workshop
The workshop will be organized under the auspices and with the support of FAO, and in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic and the Czech National FAO Committee, within the framework of Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Czech Republic and the FAO. The workshop will be implemented by Comenius Pan-European Society for Culture, Education and Scientific and Technical Cooperation. The venue of the workshop will be in the Hotel Krystal, Prague.

Working language of the workshop will be English.
