Strategy

  The Right to Food Unit works on the implementation of the human right to adequate food, using the Voluntary Guidelines. The short term strategy is to focus on the following areas:

  • Make the right to food and human rights based approaches understood and used by all FAO staff members in their work;
  • Develop methods and instruments to assist stakeholders in the implementation of the right to food;
  • Inform and educate to raise awareness and understanding by rights holders, duty bearers, civil society and the general public about the right to food
  • Support initial national implementation of the right to food and the Guidelines.

What next?

The Right to Food Unit will continue its mandated work to mainstream the Right to Food in FAO's work, develop methods and instruments for implementing the right to food, and perform necessary communication, education and awareness-raising. The many activities include:

  • Public awareness and understanding of the right to food
  • A Global Right to Food Network to bring together stakeholders such as governments and NGOs responsible for implementing the right to food at the national level for information exchange and discussion.
  • Bilateral initiatives with countries who seek initial implementation of the Right to Food.
  • Technical papers on specific issues on the right to food for policy makers, NGOs, UN agencies and other actors.
  • A wide range of awareness and learning materials made available for internal and external users on the new Right to Food website, learning portal and through CD Rom.
  • Collaboration with various universities and other academic institutions is to produce interdisciplinary research related to the right to food, integration of the issue into university curricula, and workshops, traning sessions and e-learning curricula.
  • Several information materials to increase awareness and understanding of the Right to Food, including "The Right to Food: Putting it Into Practice," eight information briefs that give an overview of the Voluntary Guidelines and how they may be practically used.
