![]() The right to food is a basic human right. In spite of the efforts that have been made and the challenge of reducing hunger set in the Millennium Development Objectives, 854 million people live in a state of serious and permanent undernourishment. In 2002, the FAO Council set up an Intergovernmental Working Group to eliminate the scourge of hunger once and for all, culminating in the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines in 2004. The object of the guidelines is to provide practical guidance to States in ensuring the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security. Relevant stakeholders, members of civil society and development practitioners can also benefit from such guidance. More… |
