Food loss and waste in the food supply chain

Reducing loss and waste throughout the food supply chain should be considered an effective solution to reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture, improving the income and livelihood of the chain actors and enhancing food and nutrition security for low-income consumers. An increasing urban population, changes to food consumption patterns and trade globalization have rendered food supply chains extremely complex and lengthy, a factor which calls for a change in mind-set from the traditional methods of addressing the causes of food loss at each stage of the food supply chain to an integrated approach. Investing in efficient, low-cost and sustainable processing technologies, adequate storage and packaging solutions, road infrastructure and market linkages, as well as providing training and education to chain actors, including consumers, are among the tried and proven interventions which increase the efficiency of the chain and thus lead to a reduction in food loss and waste. + READ MORE

Regional Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Eating

Dialogue and consultation mechanisms have reached a consensus that a fundamental change is required in order to strengthen, preserve or recover food systems that guarantee sustainability and the capacity to provide nutritious meals, affordable to everyone. This change in approach must incorporate an integrated perspective ranging from the conservation of ecosystems through the more efficient and sustainable use of land and natural resources, improvements in the techniques used for the production, storage, transformation, processing, marketing and the commercialization of food, up to the management of food losses and waste and the empowerment of responsible consumers as a prime force in the food system. The Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Symposium will be held from 5 to 7 September 2017, and will offer the chance to consider the challenges and opportunities in shaping sustainable food systems that will ensure the basic human right to adequate and healthy food for everyone. + READ MORE


Capacity Building for Food Loss Reduction in the Near East

In 2014, FAO launched the regional programme ‘Capacity Building for Food Loss Reduction in the Near East’ to implement training and awareness-raising activities to strengthen the national capacity of local leaders of producer associations, food industry managers, and extension personnel in good practices in food-handling and improved value chain management. To celebrate the project’s success, FAO hosted a closing workshop on 24 July 2017, to present and reflect the main results achieved in each participating country, as well as to develop recommendations and a way forward with food loss waste (FLW) reduction activities in the region. The workshop also aimed to identify priority actions to promote the competitiveness and efficiency of the agricultural sector in developing countries, and the better utilization of scarce productive resources such as water and land. + READ MORE



Mainstreaming food loss reduction initiatives for smallholders in food deficit areas

The Rome-based agencies (RBA) Project is jointly implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP). Funded by the Government of Switzerland, the Project seeks to improve food security and income-generating opportunities through the reduction of post-harvest losses in supported grain and pulse value chains. The Project identified critical loss points, and supported the piloting of good practices and solutions to reduce post-harvest losses and improve handling and storage in the pilot countries Burkina Faso, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Project will also support the development of regulatory frameworks covering policy, standards and norms to reduce food losses in food supply chains in each of the countries. + READ MORE


Awareness raising in schools to prevent food waste

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is currently developing education material on the issue of food waste. The goal of this activity is to raise awareness among schoolchildren, teachers and staff and their related families and networks on food loss and waste issues, and to introduce good practices conducive to food waste reduction, with an expected long-term impact. The material is made up of a comprehensive ‘education package’ that consists of different modules that can be used by teachers in class and to plan lessons and activities on the issue; it is highly adaptable and flexible, and caters to different needs regarding time availability, knowledge and age of the students, curriculum context, etc. + READ MORE



Successful Staging of Third Regional Dialogue for Food Losses and Waste Prevention in Latin America and the Caribbean

Since 2012, there has been a steadily growing awareness of Food Loss and Waste (FLW) issues in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In recent years, a number of initiatives have been established to combat FLW throughout the supply chain and at regulatory and policy levels. These include the creation of a Regional Alliance for the Reduction of Food Losses and Waste (FLW) and the establishment of national committees seeking to halve waste in the Region by 2030. The Objective of the Third Dialogue was to define region-specific common goals and strengthen the linkage between FLW prevention and the reduction and the eradication of hunger, poverty and malnutrition. The initiative also presented an opportunity for the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger (PFH) – created within the framework of the Hunger Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative (HFLACI) – to meet and work side by side with the representatives from ministries. + READ MORE
