Indian weddings are a celebration of life. For those who can afford it, few expenses are spared for an average of three to six days as floral garlands and mounds of traditional food, a centre-piece of Indian culture, are prepared to satisfy crowds that can swell well into the thousands. And while large groups of friends and extended family are invited, even larger amounts of food are typically prepared, up to an estimated thirty percent more than required. Needlessly, these celebrations contribute to a jarring food waste problem on this sub-continent where an estimated ten million weddings and millions of other celebrations take place annually. It was at the nuptials of a Bollywood star, massive in scale that a 24-year-old Ankit Kawatra witnessed first-hand the staggering food waste taking place in his native Delhi.+ READ MORE

In the last six decades, Malaysia has experienced a rapid structural transformation, shifting from a predominantly pre-industrial agriculture-based society to a thriving economy with  diverse sectors and industries. Leaders of Hotel-Restaurant-Catering (HORECA) assemble to discuss food waste solutions in Prague, Czech Republic

On the 28 and 29 November 2017, HORECA 2018 discussed food industry trends,including how the Hotel, Restaurant and Catering (HORECA) sector can mobilise forces to address the problematic food waste issue persistent in the sector. During a panel discussion attended by FAO and around 40 Michelin Star chefs, food and beverage directors, hotel and restaurant owners and other stakeholders, food waste awareness-raising was explored.  + READ MORE


First-ever ASEAN Packaging Conference held in Manilla, The Philippines 

Organised to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of ASEAN - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations - The ASEAN Packaging Conference successfully supported the dialogue around sustainable packaging in the Region. Jointly organised and implemented by the Philippines National Organizing Committee (ASEAN-NOC), the Packaging Institute of the Philippines and other partners, the Conference was held in Manilla’s Pasay City on 26 and 27 October 2017. + READ MORE


The Wastestimator Project in Finland: A new tool to estimate and monitor food waste 

A total of seventy-two Finnish establishments, including schools, day-care centres, and restaurants, took part in the food waste estimation project dubbed the “Wastestimator”. Food waste was divided into two categories: avoidable food waste (mainly referring to spoiled products and overproduction) and unavoidable food waste (vegetable peels and bones). The avoidable food waste was divided into three categories (kitchen waste, service waste, leftovers) and was weighted and sorted. + READ MORE


New York Times article examines, "How much food do we waste?"

Food waste is a glaring measure of inequality. In poor countries, most of the food waste is on the farm or on its way to market. According to Rosa Rolle, an expert on food waste and loss at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Tomatoes get squished if they are packed into big sacks. In Southeast Asia, lettuce spoils on the way from farms to city supermarkets. Very little food in poor countries is thrown out by consumers. It’s too precious.+ READ MORE


Researchers urge Kenya to curb post-harvest losses to contain hunger 

Kenya must scale up investments in modern storage facilities, efficient transport systems and farmers' education in order to reduce postharvest loss of maize according to a new report published recently. Maize losses are estimated at 12 to 20 percent of national production.+ READ MORE


Brazil and EU dialogue on Food Waste

The Postharvest Network reports that Brazil and the EU have set up a strategic partnership to promote the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practices on issues of mutual interest such as fighting food waste.  + READ MORE
