CIAT kicks off a gender and nutrition project in Uganda and Kenya

An initiative of the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance, “Making Value Chains Work for Food and Nutrition Security of Vulnerable Populations in East Africa” will be led by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), in collaboration with the universities of Hohenheim and Göttingen (Germany), the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization and Uganda’s National Nutrition and Agricultural Research Organization. The three-year initiative targeting about 5 million smallholders and rural and urban consumers in Uganda andKenya, particularly women aged 15−49 years and children aged 6−59 months, aims to develop a quick-to-cook porridge that is affordable for poor communities and has ingredients from at least four food groups. The multidisciplinary research team is well placed to achieve major impact, applying a value chain approach to nutrition that focuses on both urban and rural consumers, especially women and children.
