Payments for environmental services in Latin America as a tool for restoration and rural development.

This scientific article presents case studies from Latin America where payments for environmental services (PES) are used to promote reforestation and agroforestry systems. The article describes governmental programmes such as those existing in Costa Rica, and private systems such as those implemented for specific projects. In Colombia, CIPAV has been successful in mediating between farmers and World Bank-funded projects to promote tree-planting in silvopastoral systems with the use of differential PES schemes, in which payments are calculated based on a point system for the environmental benefits of the land-use changes made by farmers.
