FAO Representative Office in Timor-Leste

Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations(FAO), has been active in Timor-Leste since 1999, mainly supporting the government in emergency operations and recovery. In 2012, FAO established its representation office in response to the government's request to focus on developmental activities for furthering food security interventions. FAO has been closely collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries since then.

FAO has been involved in policy development and planning, capacity building, boosting agricultural and fisheries production, and enhancing rural livelihood and employment opportunities. Its activities include developing the National Action Plan for implementing the Zero Hunger Challenge, building capacity for food security information and early warning systems, introducing conservation agriculture techniques, promoting community-based aquaculture activities and poultry and small livestock farming, and providing technical support for horticulture value chain improvement.

FAO has also been supporting the government in reviewing the national forest policy, improving the fisheries sector, and enhancing the passive surveillance system for animal diseases. Its overall aim is to enhance food security and nutrition, reduce disaster risks, and provide employment opportunities in rural areas.
