Destruction and Sequestration of Rinderpest Virus
To maintain world freedom from rinderpest and upon requests from countries to assist with virus removal from their facilities, FAO expert teams support countries with virus destruction, sequestration, facility decontamination, packing and shipping rinderpest virus containing material to rinderpest holding facilities. Seven laboratories with high levels of biocontainment are approved as FAO-OIE Rinderpest Holding Facilities (FAO-OIE RHF)
Category A) FAO-OIE Rinderpest Holding Facility for storing rinderpest virus containing/material, excluding vaccine stocks |

|
Category B) Rinderpest Vaccine Holding Facility for storing only manufactured vaccines, vaccine stocks and material solely for their production: |

FAO deploys expert teams to help with:
- Destruction of virus
- Transfer of valuable strains to RHF - Category A
- Transfer of rinderpest vaccines and vaccine virus seeds to RHF - Category B
- Decontamination of all facilities and equipment
- Training in bio-safety and bio-security.
FAO also assists by providing standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment needed for laboratory manipulation and decontamination, materials and cost of shipping RVCM to the designated facilities.
