Empowering the custodians of agrobiodiversity through collective action on forgotten food

In 2021, the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) joined the Collective Action on Forgotten Food led by the Global Forum on Agricultural Research and Innovation (GFAR), Alliance of Bioversity International, and CIAT, Crops for the Future Research Centre. According to GFAR (2021), "forgotten foods are derived from a diversified set of Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS). For centuries, farmers have conserved and improved them, but they are currently underutilized; they provide vital nutrition to local communities, contribute to global food security, generate environmental services, and improve community livelihoods through additional income from their commercialization." One of the intentions of Collective Action is to take stock of what needs to be done to meet the needs of custodians farmers effectively. These actions are meant to be with the custodians themselves, as emphasized by GFAR.
