FAO Kyrgyzstan hosts the first Dialogue on Agroecology in Central Asia

The first dialogue on Agroecology in Central Asian countries was held in Bishkek on August 28, 2019.

Over the three days workshop, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), together with representatives from a number of agencies and experts from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and others, discussed gaps and opportunities on Agroecology to scale up activities that can transform agricultural production and food systems into agroecological food systems in Central Asia.

The workshop raised awareness of the multiple benefits that Agroecology can provide in Central Asian countries.

According to FAO experts, by creating synergies, Agroecology can increase food production, food security and nutrition while restoring ecosystem services and biodiversity that are necessary for sustainable agricultural production. Agroecology is an integrated approach that simultaneously applies environmental and social concepts and principles to the design and management of food and agricultural systems. Agroecology seeks to optimize the interaction between plants, animals, humans and the environment, taking into account the necessary social aspects to ensure a sustainable and equitable food system.
