Diversity in agroecosystems

The paper analyzes the effect of agricultural intensification on ecosystems’ functioning. It also highlights the need for integrating scientific basis on the agroecological management models in order to harmonize agricultural production, natural resource conservation and rural development. The paper discusses the importance of diversification in agroecosystems and how to identify which practices favor the most desired ecological equilibrium. The study shows how ecologic agriculture favours grass biodiversity and the appeareance of endemic species in mediterranean cereal production systems. Ecological agriculture, especially the abscence of herbicides, increases the quantity and diversity of grass species as well as it improves the diversity of benefitial species for pollinators. The paper highlights the importance of studying those interactions from an ecological perspective in order to value their role within the agroecosystems.
