Agroecology, a boon for achieving the objectives of land degradation neutrality

This document explores the critical role of agroecology in achieving land degradation neutrality (LDN), as defined by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). LDN seeks to balance the reduction of land degradation with the restoration of degraded lands, contributing to climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and food security. It aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 15, particularly Target 15.3, which aims to combat desertification and restore degraded land by 2030.

Agroecology offers proven solutions for addressing land degradation through sustainable practices. These include improving soil fertility, enhancing biodiversity, conserving water resources, and preventing erosion. By integrating agroecological principles into public policies and transformative projects, governments can avoid land degradation, reduce its impact, and restore affected areas, ensuring the resilience of rural communities and ecosystems.

The document emphasizes the importance of inter-sectoral collaboration, coherent policy frameworks, and targeted support for farmers to facilitate agroecological transitions. It calls for agroecology to be recognized as a central pillar in achieving LDN, offering a pathway to sustainable agricultural intensification, food security, and ecological balance. Governments are urged to prioritize agroecology in their strategies to meet 2030 targets and drive global progress toward sustainable land management.
