The Global Map of Irrigation Areas has been used in many global and regional assessments of the impact of irrigation on water resources, crop production and regional climate. In addition, the extent of irrigated land has been used as an indicator for the intensity of land use. The three journal articles related to the project (Siebert, Burke, Faurès, Frenken, Hoogeveen, Döll and Portmann, 2010; Siebert, Döll, Hoogeveen, Faures, Frenken and Feick, 2005; Döll and Siebert, 2000) have been cited more than 200 times in scientific journals indexed in the ISI Web of Science.
