FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific

High-level briefing on FAO’s new Strategic Objectives (2014-17)

03/04/2013-03/04/2013 Bangkok, Thailand

Background and objectives

The Director General’s Medium Term Plan (MTP) 2014-17 and Programme of Work and Budget (PWB) 2014-15, will be presented to the FAO Conference in June 2013. The document represents a refocus of FAO’s strategic direction against the backdrop of rising food demand, lingering food insecurity and malnutrition – including rising obesity levels, rural poverty, increasingly complex agricultural and food systems, more dynamic agricultural trade flows and regulations, climate change, and the need for better governance to address increasing agricultural development complexity. This new focus has one goal in mind: to improve the impact of the services FAO offers member countries in supporting their efforts to advance hunger free and sustainable societies.

This high-level briefing will outline the strategic thinking process and explain the five new cross-cutting Strategic Objectives for the future work of FAO. The level of results of the Strategic Objectives are development outcomes in the medium-term and they can only be achieved through the combined contributions of governments, FAO, other UN agencies and other stakeholders.

The high-level briefing will also provide an opportunity to brief participants on the status of the global and regional food security situation and future outlook, status of the implementation of  the recommendations of the 31st Asia-Pacific Regional Conference (APRC), details of the Regional Priority Framework (RPF) 2010-19 for Asia and the Pacific, status of the preparation to the 32nd Regional Conference (APRC) which will be held in Mongolia in March 2014, and other relevant matters.
