The United Nations declared 2024 the International Year of Camelids (IYC) 2024. The IYC highlights how camelids are key to the livelihoods of millions of households in over 90 countries. From alpacas to Bactrian camels, dromedaries, guanacos, llamas, and vicuñas, camelids contribute to food security, nutrition and economic growth as well as holding a strong cultural significance for communities across the world. Within this framework, the Youth Association of International Animal Husbandry Science and Technology (YAIAST) organized an event focusing on several key challenges facing the livestock sector (including camelids),including costs and production efficiency, breeding and market development, social development and talent cultivation, animal health, and food safety.
The event shared successful cases and innovative solutions, facilitate the exchange and dissemination of knowledge and technology, and brought together young experts, scholars, entrepreneurs, and innovators in the global livestock sector to discuss the application and prospects of technology in the sustainable development of livestock farming. It aimed to stimulate young people's interest and enthusiasm for innovation in livestock farming, encourage them to actively participate in the transformation and upgrading of the livestock industry, promote international cooperation and exchanges in the livestock sector, and contribute to global food security and sustainable development goals.
The conference featured two dedicated sessions focusing on camel breeding and related scientific research technologies, during which IYC Food Hero Chen Gangliang delivered a keynote address highlighting the crucial role of camelids in global food security and sustainable development. These sessions aimed to provide a platform for participants to learn about the latest advancements and innovations in camel husbandry. Additionally, there was a segment that focused on youth, encouraging young researchers and professionals to showcase their work and perspectives, and jointly promote the future development of the camel industry.
