SADC Parliamentarians Training on the Right to Food as its Regional Alliance is operationalized in South Africa
22/07/2025 - 24/07/2025
From 22 to 24 July 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF) are organizing a two-day regional training for SADC parliamentarians on legislating for the right to adequate food, to be followed by the inaugural meeting of the SADCPF Alliance on Agrifood Systems, Food Security and Nutrition, which was established in December 2024.
Timely scheduled ahead of the 2026 Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition, the training will focus on the legal foundations of the right to adequate food, especially the role of framework legislation and avenues to domesticate the Pan-African Parliament Model Law on Food and Nutrition Security. It will also discuss the protection of native foods and the role of parliaments in sustainable agrifood systems transformation, amongst others.
The initiative, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity under the Development Law Service of FAO-led project “Legislating for the right to adequate food,” aims to strengthen parliamentary leadership in addressing hunger, malnutrition, and agrifood systems transformation across the region.
