Digital Villages Initiative in Europe and Central Asia

DVI in Tajikistan

Tajikistan, a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia, is heavily dependent on agriculture for food security and employment, making it a critical sector. Due to its predominantly rural population, agriculture accounts for a large proportion of the labour force (above 60 percent in 2021) in Tajikistan and is a major contributor to GDP (19.8 percent of GDP in 2021). The sector is largely characterized by small-scale farming and family-based operations focused on the cultivation of such crops as cotton, wheat, fruit and vegetables, as well as animal husbandry.

While Tajikistan’s digital economy is still in its early stages, strategic documents like the National Development Strategy 2016–2030, among others, reflect a commitment to integrate digital technologies into agriculture. In 2023, FAO provided support to the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan for the development of a national digital agriculture strategy. Initiatives like the Tajikistan Trade Portal and Single Window have improved the efficiency of public services, and the potential to revolutionize agriculture exists based on the introduction of modern techniques, enhanced market access and improvements in data management.

The Digital Villages Initiative (DVI) operates in the pilot village of Lolazor in Hisor Valley, where focus is on the establishment of firm foundations for the digital transformation efforts, including the promotion of 4G Internet connectivity, providing the community with digital skills and offering hands-on experience with agricultural technologies. Digital technologies are also being leveraged for the enhancement of local strengths and resources, contributing to the development of local agritourism.
