16 January 2020, Berlin - FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today met with Ion Perju, Moldova’s Minister for Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment on the sidelines of the Green Week.

The Minister expressed his appreciation for FAO’s support, especially in times of need, such as drought and flooding, and for the UN agency’s ongoing support for his countries’ small scale farmers and agricultural institutions.

The Republic of Moldova is working on a strategy for agriculture and rural development and the Minister advised he would welcome FAO’s support on this.

FAO has been working with the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment to develop an Action Plan, ensuring the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets and indicators in the country’s policy documents.

SDGs for agriculture, food systems and environment have been nationalized with FAO’s support, and the Republic of Moldova is benefiting from FAO’s expertise in implementing and monitoring the respective targets and indicators.

The Director-General and the Minister also discussed the impacts of climate change as well as best solutions to tackle them, including through better water management.

They also reflected on the role of information technology, both acknowledging that these are becoming increasingly important for a rapidly digitalized agricultural system.

In closing, the Director-General expressed thanks for his meeting with Moldova’s Prime Minister at the end of December.
