FAO can assist Argentina with technology transfers to improve agriculture efficiency

17 January 2020, Berlin – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and Argentina’s Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Luis Eugenio Basterra, during their meeting today focused on how the Latin American country can improve the efficiency of its agriculture sector.

The talks took place at the sidelines of the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture.

Minister Basterra said Argentina is placing special emphasis on fighting hunger and malnutrition in an effort to provide access to healthy diets for all its population. Part of these efforts include harnessing the potential of digitalisation as an instrument to make food systems more sustainable and inclusive, he added. 

Qu noted that FAO can assist Argentina with the adoption of best practices, knowledge and technology transfers and the development of mechanisms to reach the most vulnerable people in the country. The FAO Director-General pointed to Argentina’s potential produce high quality foods and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. These efforts also need to be underpinned by good policies, he stressed. 

Minister Basterra expressed his appreciation for the FAO Director-General’s work and stressed Argentina’s support for the Decade of Family Farming.
