África occidental y central sigue enfrentándose a una inseguridad e inestabilidad política prolongadas, con conflictos en el Sahel central y la cuenca del lago Chad (Burkina Faso, Camerún, Chad, Malí, Níger y Nigeria) y violencia armada persistente en países del África central, como la República Centroafricana. Los efectos de tales retos se acentúan por los fenómenos climáticos extremos, los brotes de enfermedades y las crisis económicas, incluso debido a las consecuencias socioeconómicas de la pandemia de COVID 19. La pobreza extrema en la región ha aumentado y los efectos combinados de estos factores han deteriorado de la inseguridad alimentaria y la malnutrición, especialmente en las zonas afectadas por conflictos. Una de ellas es la República Democrática del Congo, que continúa sufriendo la mayor crisis alimentaria del mundo.
