Project's full title Facility for Action for Climate Empowerment to achieve Nationally Determined Contributions (FACE-NDC)
Introduction Funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), the project contributes towards the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and hence achievement of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Zambia, by supporting stakeholders to adopt climate-friendly behaviours.

Beneficiaries

2.07 million people:

  • 780 000 learners (girls, boys, young people, adult learners, people with disabilities in both urban and rural areas, and schools, tertiary institutions and universities, including those in marginalized areas); 200 000 teachers, teacher educators and trainers, and professors (women and men);
  • 750 000 household members engaged in forestry and agricultural activities (women, men, young people and children);
  • at least 240 000 members of civil society and non governmental organizations (scouts, girl guides, young people, school dropouts, persons with disabilities and refugees); and
  • up to 100 000 traditional, religious, political and community leaders. Members of Parliament, mayors, and professionals of Government, municipalities and the private sector will also be targeted.

Beyond Zambia, beneficiary groups will include, among others, Action for Climate Empowerment focal points, YUNGA country programmes and theEducation for Sustainable Development community.

Activities

The Energy team is responsible for strengthening university-level education, and skill development that focuses on using renewable energy for climate change mitigation. Activities include:

  • Develop and institutionalize interdisciplinary MSc modules and courses covering renewable energy for, and from, agrifood and forestry value chains;
  • enhance the capacity of academics involved in climate education and research at Zambian universities;
  • strengthen renewable energy laboratories (infrastructure and knowledge capacity) at Zambian Universities;
  • improve TEVET capacities in the area of renewable energy use in agriculture and forestry value chains;
  • build the capacity of the private sector on the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency as climate change mitigation options; and
  • expand the capacity of government staff on renewable energies and energy efficiency measures.
 
Impact Through stakeholder's adoption of climate-friendly behaviours, the project contributes towards the reduction of GHG emissions and hence achievement of the NDCs of Zambia
