Antecedentes
El agua es fundamental para todos. Es esencial para la salud y el bienestar humanos, la producción de alimentos, la energía, ecosistemas saludables, la adaptación al clima y la reducción de la pobreza, entre otras cosas. El agua es un elemento central del desarrollo sostenible.
Sin embargo, tras decenios de aumento de las extracciones de agua dulce, extracción excesiva de aguas subterráneas, gestión deficiente, uso inapropiado, y contaminación de los ecosistemas de agua dulce, el estrés hídrico se ha intensificado y los ecosistemas relacionados con el agua se han degradado. Esto ha producido repercusiones negativas en la salud humana, las actividades económicas y los suministros alimentarios y de energía. Dado que el avance hacia el logro de muchos de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) adolece de retrasos, realizar progresos en la implementación del ODS 6, relativo al agua y el saneamiento, es esencial para la consecución de todos los demás ODS.
Del 22 al 24 de marzo de 2023, el mundo se dará cita en Nueva York para la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Agua de 2023. La Conferencia fue convocada por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas y es organizada conjuntamente por Países Bajos (Reino de los) y la República de Tayikistán.
Constituye un llamamiento a la acción dirigido a todas y cada una de las personas del planeta con miras a acelerar el cambio para resolver la crisis del agua en todo el mundo. Asimismo, representa un punto de inflexión para que gobiernos, empresas y particulares adopten medidas y asuman compromisos concertados a fin de alcanzar los objetivos y las metas relativos al agua acordados internacionalmente, incluidos los establecidos en la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible. Se trata del evento relacionado con el agua más importante en una generación, el primero de su tipo en casi 50 años, por lo que debemos conseguir que tenga éxito y produzca repercusiones.
