Nutrition-sensitive fish production in homestead ponds within rice landscapes, Bangladesh

This homestead pond polyculture practice takes a nutrition and gender sensitive approach. Micronutrient-rich small fish are incorporated into the homestead pond. With regular harvest, these small fish are consumed by household members, most importantly by pregnant women, lactating mothers, adolescent girls, and children, to mitigate micronutrient malnutrition. To maximize the nutritional benefits, training may be provided on preparing small fish in a way to make it suitable for consumption even by children under two years of age.

Benefits: This practice can improve household food and nutrition security alongside the production of fish for market. The practice can also benefit women by providing them an additional source of income. Depending on aquatic habitat quality and connectivity, widespread use of the practice can produce “spillover” of small fish into wild aquatic habitats, improving the local fisheries.

How: The production, processing, and preparation of diet with small micronutrient-rich fish at the household.
