Applying flexible cropping schedules for rice (t. aman) production

To reduce crop loss due to climate uncertainties, rural communities in Bangladesh need to implement risk management strategies. Crucially important is the transplanted t. aman rice, since it is the most widespread crop. Protective measures include the adoption of flexible timing of transplanting in order to bypass the consequences of early/late floods and drought. In the case when early flooding is imminent, planting may be delayed avoiding the risk of submergence. In the case when t. aman is harvested early, chickpea/linseed could be grown subsequently in the Barind tract, using the residual soil moisture left after t. aman instead of planting boro rice (which traditionally is the subsequent crop). This is particularly relevant for areas where no irrigation facilities are in place. These strategic crop adjustments are efficient and economically viable only if timely climate/flood information is available and accessible to the rural population.
