Agricultural & Rural Convention ARC2020 Newsletter Autumn 2023

Change can be difficult. Sometimes a big general idea is well supported - like a just transition - but when it comes to the details, the specifics, there is uncertainty.
And often this uncertainty is sown by the sheer weight and style of the lobbying machine. It has always been thus.
For example, brain damaging lead was in all paint and all petrol. This is just one of the many things that can seem unthinkable now, but was commonplace for decades. It seemed unchangeable.
Despite huge lobby efforts, change happened.
Now, as EU parliamentary elections of 2024 start to appear on the horizon, the kickback against the EU Green Deal intensifies.
Somehow, the big picture idea seems fine - a green deal - but the details, on pesticides, animal welfare, nature restoration and sustainable food systems, are stalling. Legislation is moving very slowly, against a ticking clock, as we've been chronicling.
However, there is still time to progress these elements, so the coming months will be key.
On the ground, action happens too - indeed, without action on the ground momentum would be hard to build.
To this end, we are working with interested parties in Germany to examine what a sustainable food system can be like in reality.
ARC, Kollektiv von Morgen and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bäuerliche Landwirtschaft (AbL) are together hosting a European Action Gathering – A rural bridge between sustainable agri and food policies in the EU.
A Sustainable Food System Law is just one part of the EU Green Deal that needs progressing.
And there are many ways to progress change. EU, national, regional and local levels all matter. Let's work on all fronts to activate change.
Take care!
