Alvaro Lario: “Without family farming, we would not have eaten today”

An interview with the President of IFAD


During the interview, Alvaro Lario, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), shed light on the pressing challenges facing family farming, particularly in the context of climate change. Lario underscored the essential role of small-scale farmers in global food security, highlighting their contributions to feeding billions of people worldwide. Emphasizing the significance of innovation, he discussed strategies to empower farmers and enhance their resilience in the face of evolving environmental conditions. Lario also addressed issues of gender equality and youth involvement, stressing the need for inclusive policies and support mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of family farming practices.

 

The interview took place in the the VIII Global Conference Family Farming: Sustainability of our Planet, organized by the World Rural Forum in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, where more than 150 representatives from all five continents have gathered to discuss the future of family farming, which feeds 70 percent of the world's population.
