Major problems facing farmers in the south of Kyrgyzstan, such as degrading soil fertility and very low incomes are addressed by the project. The project was built upon the previous experience of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation and other organizations in organic cotton production in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, India and Tanzania and in trade promotion of cotton to Europe. Past experiences confirm that switching from conventional to organic farming can contribute both to an improvement of the economic conditions of farmers and also to the betterment of serious health and environmental problems.

The main goal of the project is to promote organic farming in Central Asia, whilst trading organic cotton, and other organic products, on international and domestic markets, thus allowing farmers interested in alternative methods of farming to make their living in an environmentally sustainable way.
