Agroecology is critical in the wake of climate change - expert

In this article, Francis Shivonje, the Policy and Advocacy National Coordinator for the Biovision Foundation in Kenya, underscores the importance of a National Agroecology Strategy. He highlights that smallholder farms, responsible for 75% of Kenya's agricultural production, are pivotal for both food security and the nation's economic stability. Agroecology, by catering to the specific requirements of these smallholders, not only optimizes their productivity but also acts as a potent empowerment instrument. This approach offers Kenya a strategic advantage in solidifying employment prospects and nurturing resilient job sectors. However, while agroecology is heralded as the key to sustainable food systems, a cohesive national policy to champion its myriad benefits - from mitigating climate change to ensuring food accessibility and conserving biodiversity - remains elusive in many countries. These national strategies often span multiple policy domains, including agriculture, conservation, health, and nutrition, with an aim to integrate these sectors seamlessly. While these strategies are rooted in agroecological principles, they sometimes adopt related terminologies, like organic ecological agriculture, instead of the term "agroecology."
