The case for agro ecological local food systems

“Eating is an agricultural act” as the American novelist, farmer and poet Wendell Berry stated in his 1989 essay ‘On the pleasures of eating’. But what does this actually mean? According to Berry: “Most people think of food as an agricultural product, but they do not think of themselves as participants in agriculture; they just think of themselves as ‘consumers”. Right now, in Europe many people do not know what they are actually eating: supply chains are long, and complex, and produce is often traded in the international marketplace, leaving the average consumer with no idea about the provenance of his or her food.
