The Global Food Safety Initiative - Delivering Impact for Safe Sustainable Food

29/03/2022

After two years of online conferencing, the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is an in-person event again this year. Meeting in Barcelona, Spain, over 900 delegates from across the food industry and the wider food safety community will discuss a wide-ranging array of food safety-related issues. The event sees GFSI “expand and strengthen its role, moving full speed ahead on its ‘Race to the Top’.”

Meeting from 29 to 31 March, the conference will look at “every facet of the food safety ecosystem”, with a programme that includes subjects like “Leading on Food Safety as a CEO”, “Partnering Across the Public-private Sectors”, “Advancing Food Safety Science” and “Applying Technology & Innovation”.

World Food Safety Day gets its own entry in the programme, under “Making Commitments for World Food Safety Day”. The conference will discuss how delegates can support World Food Safety Day and how to contribute more broadly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations General Assembly supported the establishment of World Flood Safety Day because of the impact it can have on achieving the SDGs.

Among the many speakers will be representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Catherine Bessy, Senior Food Safety Officer, and Markus Lipp, Senior Food Safety Officer. Francesco Branca, Director, Department of Nutrition and Food Safety at the World Health Organization (WHO) will also attend, together with WHO’s Luz Maria De-Regil, Unit Head, Multisectoral Action in Food Systems. Tom Heilandt, Secretary to the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission will also speak on the subject of ‘Food Safety is Everyone’s Business’, when he will invite delegates to make a commitment for the fourth annual World Food Safety Day on 7 June.
